Section 5: Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that afflicts about 500 people annually in Sweden. The inflammation may occur throughout the gastrointestinal tract, from the esophagus to the rectum, but most commonly, the inflammation is localized to the lower portion of the small intestine and sometimes the upper portion of the colon. The disease is chronic, which means that it cannot be cured and those afflicted are forced to live with it. Just as with ulcerative colitis the disease is intermittent. Many people have no problems for long periods and can live and work as usual, while others have frequent flare-ups.

What is the cause?

Despite considerable research the cause of the inflammation is still unknown. Researchers have various theories about possible causes: impaired immunity, hereditary factors, infection and environmental factors.

What are the symptoms?

  • Persistent diarrhea several times daily
  • Abdominal pain
  • Advanced disease can cause blood in stool
  • Weight loss is not uncommon due to poor nutrition
  • Some people have joint problems

What can you do about the situation?

  • Crohn's disease must always be treated by a doctor!
  • Some people feel that certain foods improve or worsen the symptoms. Ask for a referral to a dietitian who can help you with your diet
  • During flare-ups some people develop "secondary" lactose intolerance, which means they may be extra sensitive to milk and dairy products during that period. When the symptoms disappear it is possible to gradually increase milk intake
  • Eat a well-rounded diet and make sure that you get all the nutrients you need in the form of vitamins, minerals and calories. It is also important to have regular mealtimes to make it easier for your stomach and intestines
  • Lactobacilli are good for your stomach and can help to normalize the intestinal flora. Foods like ProViva contain lactobacilli
  • Omega-3 fat which is found in fatty fish has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect and for those people who suffer from joint pain an increased intake of fatty fish or dietary supplements could be beneficial
  • Eat slowly and chew your food well!
