Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (Lp299v), the probiotic bacteria in ProViva, was isolated from healthy intestinal mucosa and its beneficial properties are patented. The bacterium was initially discovered in a research project that began in Lund in 1986. The researchers were tasked with creating a new type of nutritional product for patients who must be tube-fed or receive supplemental nutrition in conjunction with complex surgery. The medical perspective lives on at Probi, in part because the company places high demands on its clinical documentation. It is Probi's ambition that the company's probiotics should have well-documented medical and physiological effects. As a result of the company's dedicated efforts, ProViva with Lp299v has received approval for its health claims. More areas of application have been studied than for other probiotics. Moreover, a large number of research reports illuminate in detail various aspects of the bacterial function. Probi is also unique because of its early efforts to logically and consistently document the genetic identity of the bacteria in detail, which enables Probi to ensure high quality and safety with respect to the genetic stability of the bacteria.

Probi carries out extensive analyses of each new batch of bacterial culture. In addition to hygiene testing, identity analyses are carried out, where the fermentation pattern and genetic profile (Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA Analysis) are verified against the source culture. The bacteria's ability to adhere to the intestinal mucosa is also tested. The startup cultures intended for ProViva products are subjected to a trial run at Skåne Dairy, after which samples from the fermented oat base and the involved ProViva products are sent for yet another identity test. Once the analyses in this step gain approval the products even receive final approval for delivery. The customer can therefore always be assured of getting the right bacteria in the right quantity and that the effect will be exactly as expected.
